Josefina Diaz, 92 of Elgin died Wednesday, August 3, 2016 at Advocate Sherman Hospital. Born June 18, 1924 in Uriangato, Guanajuato, Mexico she was the daughter of Jose and Soledad (Sanchez) Malagon.
A very pious woman, she was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church for over 50 years. Josefina loved her family and was known as a true people-person. A member of one of the first Mexican families to settle in Elgin in the 1950’s, she was an entrepreneur at heart. She worked with her son, Jose Luis and his family for many years to found La Roca Grocery Store and at La Puesta del Sol Restaurant in addition to devoting her love and attention to a large extended family.
Josefina is preceded in death by her parents; loving husband Jose of 36 years; one son Jose Luis Diaz in 2008; 1 granddaughter, Maria de Lourdes (survived by husband Rafael) Guzman in 2011; 2 brothers; three sisters.
She is survived by one son Manuel (Beatriz) Diaz; one daughter, Maria Socorro (Gonzalo) Avina; one daughter-in-law, Virginia Diaz all of Elgin; 7 grandchildren, Sandra (Victor) Camarena of Elgin, Marco (Alejandra) Diaz of Kansas City, MO., Jose L. (Asminda) Diaz of Elgin, Andres Diaz of Elgin, Beatriz (Joel) Pollack of Elgin, Victor (Paulina) Diaz of Elgin, Manuel J. (Jessica) Diaz of Denver, Co; 22 great-grandchildren; 8 great, great-grand children. 3 sisters, 2 sisters-in-law and many, many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Visitation will be held Monday, August 8, from 4 – 8 p.m. at the O’Connor – Leetz Funeral Home, Elgin with funeral Mass Tuesday the 9th at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Elgin with Fr. Robert Camacho, officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery.
