James (Jim) E. Smith, of Elgin, died on May 2, 2021 at Presence St. Joseph Hospital.
Jim was born on November 29, 1942 to Bubbie (nee Williams) and James A. Smith. He was born of meager means in a holler of Stone Kentucky where he was the fourth of eight children.
Jim served in the Army and was fond of telling stories of his time in Germany. After he was discharged, Jim moved to Elgin. It was at Juby’s Drug Store in Elgin where he met the love of his life, Ruth. They had two children, Randy and Christy. Between the two children, Jim and Ruth were blessed with four grandchildren, two of which are now engaged to be married.
Jim was a true haggler. He would buy, sell, or trade anything. He was a very proud man, especially of his family and would tell anyone who would listen all about them.
Jim is preceded in death by his parents, James and Bubbie; beloved wife, Ruth; son, Randy; five sisters and one brother.
Jim’s memory will be cherished by daughter, Christy (Butch) Carter; daughter-in-law, Anna Coester; grandchildren, Amanda Coester, Jesse Coester, Colton Carter, Samantha Carter and his sister, Jesse Ann (Donald) Thompson.
There will be a visitation and service at O’Connor-Leetz Funeral Home, 364 Division Street, Elgin on Thursday, May, 6 from 9:00 am until time of service at noon. The service will be live streamed. Please see information below.
